My menopausal muses

November 21, 2008

Learning to write has been a slow process but one I have mostly learned at work. How this fact would have riled the younger me, the me with dreams of literary glory that had nothing to do with creating better press release content. But I wasn’t writing at home back then, nothing would come to me that needed writing, and at the office it was either scribble or clean toilets.

So I scribbled, and lo and behold, the muses called. Not young beauties in diaphanous robes, mind you; these chicks were past their prime, but they were still lively. Dressed in pant suits and high heels, they sat by my desk and whispered instructions, gave inspiration and nodded when the piece was done. They smirked a little, only too happy to help a younger man wield his pen, as it were, but they were all about the work, the 9 to 5, about getting the job done. And in writing as in life, that’s the most important thing.
